Green Spirit Fuels Ltd was launched in June 2005 by grain trader Wessex Grain. The company was founded to produce and market bioethanol. It will do this at a number of sites in the UK, the first of which will be built at Henstridge in Somerset. Development funding was announced in September 2005, and planning permission for the Somerset site was received in January 2006. In June 2006, the company announced that its second plant would be sited in the Humberside region. Bioethanol is a more environmentally friendly form of fuel for vehicles which normally run on petrol. It saves carbon emissions (greenhouse gases) during its production, and burns more cleanly and efficiently. Click here for more information about bioethanol. The plant at Henstridge is expected to produce some 130 million litres of bioethanol per year, enough for one billion miles of motoring. The plant will also produce 120,000 tonnes of animal feed, and 97,000 tonnes of CO2 .
